How many countries are there in the world?
There are 195 countries in the world that are widely recognised: 193 member states of the United Nations plus the Vatican City (Holy See) and Palestine, which hold observer status. A handful of other territories are only partially recognised.

Russia is the largest country in the world by area, spanning eleven time zones across Europe and Asia. Canada is second, followed by the United States, China and Brazil. Russia is nearly twice the size of Canada.
