🏝️ Seven islands, one archipelago
The Canary Islands belong to Spain, but they're not in Europe at all — they float in the Atlantic Ocean, right off the coast of Africa! There are seven main islands: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. Most of them now have their real coastline drawn on the map, so you can fly right along their shores.
🌋 Born from fire
Every single Canary Island was made by volcanoes! The tallest one, Mount Teide on Tenerife, is Spain's highest mountain at 3,715 metres — and it's still an active volcano. On Lanzarote you'll find Timanfaya, a landscape so fiery and bare it looks like the surface of the Moon. And on La Palma, Volcán de Tajogaite erupted as recently as 2021, creating brand-new black-sand beaches.
🌳 Wild and protected
Four of the islands' most special places are national parks: Teide, Timanfaya, Garajonay (an ancient misty forest on La Gomera) and the Caldera de Taburiente, a giant volcanic crater on La Palma so big you could almost fit a whole city inside it.
🏙️ Cities by the sea
Fly into Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the two biggest cities — together they even share the job of being the region's capital! Along the way you'll pass La Laguna, Arrecife and other island towns.
💡 Did you know?
- The Canary Islands are named after dogs, not birds! The Latin name Insulae Canariae means "Islands of the Dogs."
- El Hierro is so far west that, centuries ago, mapmakers used it as the starting point — longitude zero — before Greenwich took over.
- Teide's peak is often capped with snow in winter, even though the islands feel like summer almost all year round.
