๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น Italy has joined!

28 June 2026

Grab your helicopter and warm up the rotors: Italy has joined Toponauts! ๐Ÿš๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น The boot-shaped country juts deep into the Mediterranean and is packed with mountains, volcanoes, islands and world-famous cities. Ready for a flight?

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ The 20 regioni โ€” and zoom in!

Italy is split into 20 regioni (regions), from mountainous Valle d'Aosta and rich Lombardy in the north to sunny Sicily and Sardinia in the south. Five of them are "special" (with extra rules of their own): Valle d'Aosta, Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Sicily and Sardinia. Best of all: tap a region and you zoom in to practise the cities of that area โ€” just like the Bundeslรคnder of Germany and the states of America.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Capitals & big cities

Every region has its own capital. Do you know Turin, Milan, Venice, Florence, Naples and Palermo? And in the middle, of course, lies Rome โ€” the capital of the whole country, with the Colosseum and thousands of years of history.

๐ŸŒŠ Follow the rivers

Fly along the Po, at 652 km the longest river in Italy, flowing through the great plain of the north. The Tiber winds right through Rome, the Arno through Florence and Pisa, and the Adige and Adda come down from the mountains.

โ›ฐ๏ธ Mountains andโ€ฆ ๐ŸŒ‹ volcanoes!

In the north the Alps tower over the land, and like a backbone the Apennines run from north to south through all of Italy. And then the most exciting bit: the volcanoes! Etna on Sicily is, at 3357 metres, the highest and most active volcano in Europe. Vesuvius near Naples buried the city of Pompeii in the year 79, and Stromboli has been spitting fire almost non-stop for thousands of years.

๐Ÿž๏ธ Lakes & ๐Ÿ๏ธ islands

In the north the great lakes glitter โ€” Lake Garda (the largest), Lake Maggiore and Lake Como. And out at sea lie the islands of Sicily and Sardinia, plus smaller gems like Elba, Capri and Ischia.

๐Ÿคฉ Did you knowโ€ฆ

There are two tiny countries entirely inside Italy: San Marino and Vatican City โ€” the latter being by far the smallest state in the world! And if you look closely at the map, Italy's "boot" looks like it's kicking a football at the island of Sicily. โšฝ

๐Ÿš How do you play it?

Choose Italy as your country, or play a single map (regioni, capitals, rivers, volcanoesโ€ฆ). Steer your helicopter to the right spot and get to know the map of Italy as you fly โ€” at your own pace. Buon viaggio! ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น
