The topography game of old — now perfected

31 May 2026

Maybe you remember it from years ago: a simple topography game where you flew a little helicopter over the map of the Netherlands. The teacher asked for a place — Groningen, Maastricht, Zwolle — and you steered your heli to the right spot on the map and landed there. No complicated explanation, just flying, searching and learning. That very simplicity made it so fun and educational: you remembered places because you flew there yourself.

Why that game worked so well

Topography sticks better when you do it instead of cramming it from a booklet. By looking up a place on the map, you link the name to a direction, a neighbouring province and a spot in the country. That old helicopter game understood that like no other — it turned practising topography into a little adventure.

What we did with it

At Toponauts we're big fans of that nostalgia. We took that same familiar idea — flying a helicopter over the map — and perfected it with modern tech:

  • A real, smooth map instead of a coarse picture: you glide smoothly over the whole of the Netherlands.
  • The game grows with you: the better you know a place, the less help you get. So you climb from beginner to master all by yourself.
  • Much more than the Netherlands: also the provinces, rivers, Europe and the whole world — with countries, capitals and flags.
  • More vehicles: besides the helicopter also a boat and even space.
  • For the classroom: teachers can create a class and follow progress.

The same joy of play, now better

The core has stayed the same as that game of old: cheerfully flying and learning topography through play. Only prettier, smarter and completely free and ad-free. So a new generation enjoys the same fun we learned so much from back then.
