🌋 What is a volcano, anyway?

A volcano is an opening in the Earth's crust where molten rock (magma), ash and gases can escape. Some volcanoes are active (they can erupt), others are dormant (quiet for a long time) or extinct. Together they tell the story of how our living Earth moves.

Start nearby with the Italian fire mountains — Vesuvius near Naples, mighty Etna on Sicily and the little island of Stromboli. Jump to the Teide on the Canary Islands (the highest mountain in Spain!) and Eyjafjallajökull in Iceland — which you probably can't pronounce on the first try.

Many of these volcanoes lie in a great arc around the Pacific Ocean: the "Ring of Fire". There the plates of the Earth's crust grind past each other, and that's exactly why those places have so many volcanoes and earthquakes.

Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on Earth (measured from the sea floor, even taller than Mount Everest!), Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe, and the ash cloud of Eyjafjallajökull grounded half of Europe's air traffic in 2010.
